Skills & Concepts:
* AWARENESS: appreciation and awareness for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture, including development of the ability to compare and contrast grammatical and cultural knowledge
* THE FOUR AREAS OF LANGUAGE: listening, speaking, reading, writing; development strategies for polishing these skills and becoming more effective language learners
* VOCABULARY: alphabet, prayers, greetings, manners, numbers, days and dates, weather, telling time, geographical terms, likes and dislikes, activities, classroom objects and phrases, school supplies, colors, physical and personality description, emotions, clothing and
shopping, places and events in the town or city, food/meals/restaurant vocabulary, sports
* GRAMMAR: subject pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, gender of nouns, noun-adjective agreement, subject-verb agreement, asking and answering questions, informal commands, affirmative and negative words, idiomatic expressions
* VERBS: ser in present tense, present tense verbs of regular verbs –ar, -er, -ir
* CULTURE: Introduction to the Spanish-speaking world: geography, Hispanic influence in the U.S.A., famous Spanish speakers, celebrations, history, cultural products such as music, art, literature, food, etc.
Classes will be conducted in Spanish/English format and students will be encouraged to use Spanish to the fullest extent possible.
